Who are the indigenous people of your country?

What do you know about them?

Anonymous The Native Americans I live in a state where approximately a third of the population are indigenous to the area. I lived on the reservation for some time. Their culture is under siege both within and without.
Anonymous from USA Wow - many Nations! There must be 200-300. I can only name a few (& spelling may not be right): Cherokee (where I live) Creek Pawnee Chaktaw Sioux Comanche Navaho (Den Mostly from readings and TV programs. I do have a few Cherokee & Lakota friends and have done business with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. I have other friends who are not indigenous peoples but have lived on an Indian Reservation and have shared their stories with me.
Gary from USA There are many tribes typically several covering every region. There's great diversity amongst them.
George Brock from USA Indian Not as much as I should. their singing is unintelligible to outsiders but is interesting to hear- especially with drumming
Anonymous from USA Native American Indians A fair amount. There are several tribes of Native Americans. They were involved in several wars in the early years of the USA. Many died from diseases new to them. Most famous Native American woman is Sacagawea. She has a coin from the US mint.
Graeme from USA Native American Indians and Inuit Quite a bit. They had an amazing impact on world agriculture
Graeme White from United Kingdom White Caucasian Like vin ordinaire; culturally lacking consumerist no sense of belonging
Greg from Australia Aborigines They have a defined culture which varies depending on the location and tribe
Gypsy Mama from Canada First nations Many tribes dislocated to 'reserves' outside of their natural habitats so traditions were disrupted along with much destruction of culture through the 'residential' schools and so called 'civilization'. Too much pain is evident today as a result of these past behaviors and I question how any actions today can undo these pains from our past.
Howard Williamson from USA Anasazi Navajo Apache Zuni and other native American tribes I have traveled quite a bit in the American southwest through the lands inhabited by these tribes and have visited many of their pueblos villages and museums as well.
Anonymous Native Americans They were in the USA first and we have nearly made them extent.
Ian from USA The Indians (Native Americans as they are commonly called) That they were on this continent first and have been brutally mistreated and subjected to horrible injustices. Many but not the majority live on reservations that are FAR TOO SMALL that the English (now American) designated for them to have.
Ilias from France They are called the Gaul (celtic people). Gallia was a name given by Caesar. There were different regions like Belgium: Gallia Belgica or Belgica Prima. Gallia Narbonensis (now there is a city in France called Narbonne). I know more about the Belgian Gauls since I am Belgian myself. For the French you should read Asterix and Obelix Vercingetorix... All interesting stories some real history others very close to.
Jaime-lynn from USA American Indians The white people screwed them over.
James Byron from United Kingdom Indigenous people of the UK are made up of the English Scots Welsh Cornish Ulster-Scots and Gaels of Northern Ireland I believe indigenous Britons are descended from people who settled here from other lands prior to the 11th or 12th Century. These people were the pre-Celts Celtic Romans Anglo-Saxons and the Normans and their influences are still evident in various regions of Great Britain.
James from USA American indians First to come here and still waiting to be treated fairly.
James from USA The Navajo and Hopi and Pueblo peoples and the Anasazi and Mogollon who preceded them They lived in unison with Mother Earth
Anonymous from USA Native americans There were many tribes in many different areas. Music includes flutes drums and shakers/bells.
Jan from Australia Aboriginal Born and raised here - but citified. I'm getting older and am growing into 'seeing' the sacred space of land and people....without the distractions of my upbringing.
Janene from Australia Aborigines Travelled here from Gwanda Land many befriended white settlers many were killed as well lived off the land go walkabout often have mythical stories and animals related to the land and sea alcohol has been a major downfall for many first names aren't mentioned when someone has died
Jason from Australia In my opinion and from what I have learnt and understood they are the care takers of the land they don't own it they only are borrowing it till they can pass it on. They are strongly willed and have a a lot of respect for there land and culture.
Jeff from USA The people who we call Native Americans or American Indians. there are various tribes. They were here long before the europeans came to discover" the US. They lived in harmony with their environment. they had rich spiritual traditions."
Anonymous from USA There are many often lumped together as Native Americans" but each as different as Russians are from Germans or Italians. " Quite a lot but in general they have different histories languages cultures. From the Sioux to the Apache to the Pueblo to the Cherokee to the Hawaiians there is not much in common other than their experience with the Europeans.
Jeffrey from USA Native Americans They were here long before the white man. And they fought against them for the right to live on their own land. Scalping those they would catch. Pretty cool people. Very into spirituality and medicine men.
Jeffrey from USA Native americans They were the original people in this nation yet their claims to the land were consistently violated and their attachment to land sea and air consistently ignored.
Jenni Abbott from Australia Aboriginal People They been here over 60000 years. They mostly live in NSW and QLD and live in mostly remote areas although they do have a large population in places such as Darwin. They speak of dreaming or dreamtime which explains life and the origin of the world and they go on walkabout for spiritual journey.
Jennifer from USA Native Americans I think they crossed over on the Bering Straight?
Anonymous Native American Indian Basics learned in school
Anonymous from Netherlands Many subraces have come and went. There are a lot and I must admit I know little of them.
Jessica from USA Native Americans I know various aspects of their culture on of my best friends is Choctaw. An example of what I know is we went to a pow-wow and I had her explain the different element of the different dances and how like with the grass dace the fringes on the dress need to keep moving.
Anonymous from USA Hopi Tribe They live in what is known as the Four Corners" of the U.S. and they believe in love and compassion for all beings and in the one Great Spirit which lives in all of us. "
Joan from USA Native Americans I'm familiar with mostly Navajo Paiute and Zuni since I grew up in Nevada and those nations are common there. The average per capita income on the Navajo Reservation is $6 217. 56% of Navajos on the Reservation live below the poverty level. 43% of the labor force on the Navajo Reservation is unemployed. I know about these things through places I support like the Southwest Indian Foundation.
Joanne from Australia Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders Before colonialisation they fared better in health and lifestyle. In western terms they have a more complex system of family. Their spirituality plays a significant role in their lives as well as with the land. Introduction of flour sugar and alcohol has caused a terrible imbalance in their life span. Before colonialisation the Australian Aboriginals life span was far better than their European counterparts.
Joe from USA The many nations of Native Americans. They were fractured as much as they were united. They lived off of the land and paid respect to the environment from which they got life. Leaving behind as small of a footprint as possible. They appeared to have migrated from what is now known as the continent of Asia when the land masses had drier connections. They have a long and interesting history that varies greatly from tribe to tribe and to this day struggle to maintain that identity in the modern age.
Anonymous American Indians Not a lot
Joey Terhljan from Canada Many first nations people. They have a very rich culture and very beautiful paintings & crafts.

John from USA Inuits american indians Some peaceful some not
Anonymous American Indians The entered through what was once a land bridge near Alaska and migrated south.
Jonathan from Australia They are the first humans to have inhabited the Australian continent in human kind's gradual expansion over the globe. They are the discoverers and original caretakers of Australia. Their culture is rich and ancient and dying. They are oppressed.
Joni from Finland Saamelaiset (in finnish) Sami people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people) They live up north in Lapland and traditionally live of the land. They herd reindeers and hunt go fishing and so on. They have their own language and they don't much care for country borders. They live and sometimes move across borders between Finland Sweden and Norway.
Jonny Monument from United Kingdom Hard to tell... depends how you define Indigenous! Ultimately we're mostly Germanic and Latin but I will take it from the last Ice Age. Scotland: Pictish and Gaels (who the Romans were terrified of - think Hadrian and Antonine Walls). However some of these people were Irish in origin England: Modern-day Welsh Ancient Cumbric Cornish and other old tribes Welsh: Modern-day Welsh Ireland: indigenous Irish/Celts Overall the descendants of Paleolithic hunter gatherers are the indigenous settlers but they organised themselves into tribes known differently and speaking different languages. They were the original settlers here in the UK who came north with the retreating ice. Hunter gatherers who displayed incredible art forms poetry craft etc skill set. They had some crazy religious practices (we still do!) and seriously loved the land and the sun (think Stonehenge). Many would have lived in now what is the North Sea and English Channel so their settlements were lost to us as the ice melted and the sea rose. They were gradually displaced by the Romans (mostly in England with exceptions ie Cornwall where the Cornish hung on) the Vikings (Isle of Man Scotland North and East England) Jute-people (from Denmark) Saxons (Germanic) who were a ruling elite but not actually that numerous Normans (England)... but oddly William I had Cornish roots I gather so it was more of a homecoming!... and finally the EU is seeing off the rest! I could go on... it's beautiful and intriguing this tiny Island has SO much history. Much neglected but worth the effort.
Anonymous from USA The Indians/Native Americans (I have friends of such decent who hate the term Indian and others who hate Native American. I never know which one to use.) They were the original inhabitants of the area now known as the United States of America. White people came from Europe and decimated them through biological warfare and genocide forcing unfathomable suffering. And then white people paid them off like everything would be fine. They were forced to lose their language music art culture and almost everything else. And it's still continuing today. Seriously messed up and makes me feel guilty a lot for being of white decent in this country (amid other white Euro-centric atrocities)
June from USA American Indians Alaskan Indians Hawaiian (depends on where in the USA you are talking about) The indigenous people were badly mistreated driven from their lands and forced to live in sub-standard conditions. For many American Indians their plight has not improved. These people have a rich history and were able to live harmoniously with nature.
Justin Castillo from USA Native Americans Many tribes and few are still around.
Kai Lehrke from Canada Many different tribes of native Americans Lots. They lived close to the land there were almost 24 million at the time of the white mans arrival. They where often nomadic. Anonymous Native americans (cherokee Sioux lenni lenape navajo Iroquois apache and many more tribes) They lived well with the land and took only what they needed. They interfered with nature as little as possible and were doing just fine until europeans came and either murdered them or gave them small pox.

Lee from Australia The aboriginals Not too much just that there are many different tribes and dialects. that they have a lot of respect for the land and the animals only taking what they need. oh yer and they can make beautiful music out of something most other cultures would just throw on the fire:)
Anonymous Italian =D It tells the story
Les from USA The American Indian. Towards the west in California and Arizona the Spanish can be considered indigenous as they predate the early expansion of the US. The American Indian is made up of many tribes and cultures. Some tribes are interrelated such as the Pawnee Sioux and the Lakota to name a few. The Cherokee with the first tribe to join the reservation voluntarily and were the first to become westernized. The plains Indians and those tribes of the Midwest were amongst the last to be relocated to reservations. Each tribe had/have its own way of life that differed from their commonality. The Pawnee were master horseman and hunters. The Pima and Navajo were primarily farmers. The Sioux Comanche and Apache Indians were a few that were considered warring tribes. The Cherokee had the first written language that could be translated into English.

Native American were all over the USA. Sadly people are not taking the time to know the history.
Mike Clayton from United Kingdom Difficult one - there have been so many successive waves of peoples/invaders over the centuries that the British are now quite a mixture. I suppose that if you wanted to be very specific then I would list certain groups such as the Beaker People Scots Picts and Celts.
