Rob from USA |
There are many different peoples indigenous to the USA. The Penobscot Passamaquoddy Micmac. and Maliseet peoples have lived where I live in Maine for thousands of years. There are hundreds of other nations and tribes throughout the USA. |
The Passamaquoddy and Penobscot nations have reservations which they govern. The Micmacs and Maliseets are smaller groups. All groups are significantly economically disadvantaged. The Penobscots have been in court with the state for a long time over water quality issues on the Penobscot River and control over environmental impacts. Much of the culture of all four groups was damaged by contact with Europeans and for many years indigenous children were not allowed to speak their language in schools. Many stories and rituals were lost. The Passamaquoddy and Penobscots have been rebuilding their cultures over the last fifty years with help from western tribes. There is a lot more that could be said but this is some of what comes to mind first. |

I have been to a few ceremonial sweat lodges with the first nations... from what I have learned through their culture is that they hold a lot of the same spirit and respect toward that which gives us life as most indigenous peoples... and they are facing and have faced they same issues as most after being settled |
Taylor from USA |
Native Americans |
Wow... not sure where to start. I know enough to know that I don't really know enough. I know that they had a very different way of viewing the world - specifically the way they viewed themselves within the world. Their relationship with nature is something I think we could all learn from. They were great storytellers hunters dancers and survivors. |
Teresa from USA |
Native Americans (Indians) |
They are the stewards of the land and were the first peoples on this land. |
Tero from Finland |
The Saami the once nomadic reindeer herders living in Lapland |
For a long long while they got shafted pretty much like the Aboriginal people in Australia. There have been long drawn-out battles about land rights not unlike in Australia and in the 1800s pretty much of their traditional shamanic religion was destroyed by the Christian church. For example there are only a few (less than a dozen) original shaman drums in existence that survived the Church persecutions - all others were burned. In the last 40-50 years their situation has improved vastly nowadays the Finnish government recognizes their own parliament and the National Broadcasting Corporation has a Saami language radio channel (and a whole lot of regional TV shows as well). Nowadays Lapland is a booming tourist economy and the Saami have made a part of it their own but still sometimes I feel they're used just as showroom dummies for British tourists looking for a bit of wintertime exotica. |
Terry from Australia |
They are the original inhabitants of Australia and are known as Aboriginals |
They migrated from Africa about 70 000 years ago and arrived in Australia about 50 000 years ago. There were around 300 spoken languages with around 600 different dialects with only about 15 languages spoken today. They were semi-nomadic moving around due to the changing food availability across different ares as seasons changed |
Thomas from USA |

Tiago from Portugal |
Portugal has a LONG history of migrations both inward and outward. It has been claimed to be one of the last refuges of the Neanderthals before they went extinct and has been invaded conquered occupied or otherwise populated by a myriad of peoples. We also have occupied many distant countries notably Brazil and large parts of Africa. I've heard portuguese sailors were the first to record the existence of Australia! |
Nowadays Portuguese people are laid-back conservative imaginative but lack self-esteem as a nation. We take pride in our language especially in poetry. We are welcoming hosts but sometimes not so fond of our close neighbours - which reflects at a larger scale in our distrust for Spain our only neighbouring country. All in all we are relaxed and don't strain ourselves in anything more than necessary:) |

Not much - very old group of people with more western looking faces and generally curly hair now restricted to northern Japan but in the past probably more widespread own language and very different culture. |
Tim White from Canada |
Inuit in the north and Algonquin in south - with Metis and my own heritage as M'ic Maq (we just got our status as founding members of Qalipu Band...then Newfoundland had its own indigenous peoples called the Beothuks |
The metis are mix of french and are mostly in central canada. the M'ic Maq are eastern canada and the newest band was created on Sept 26 2011. The Beothuks indigenous only to Newfoundland were decimated by infectious disease the last survivor being Mary March though the release of DNA has been prohibited by the government - any ancestors would have land rights to the entire province. Our northern brothers are the Inuit and live in more remote northern areas many think of igloos though with global warming and integration this heritage is being lost in some manner. |

Trechterbekervolk" from the northern part of the Netherlands " |
They built 'Hunnebedden' (Dolmen) and nobody knows what the purpose of those dolmen were. We have 54 dolmen in the Netherlands of about 4000 years old. Archeologists say that they were used for graves but I am not sure that is their real purpose. I think it were places to meditate (like temples) and were linked to sound produced for meditation and healing. |
