Was aware of the instrument but first really became interested when it was part of the soundtrack for the Crocodile Dundee movie. Have since been interested in its sound and use in both traditional Aboriginal context and in modern music. First saw a traditional didge on a trip to Sydney in 1994. Incorporated it into contemporary Christian music at church. Self-taught amateur. I find the tones and rhythms interesting. |

As a child in the old primary school social studies pre-1970's subject and for some strange reason became very alert to anything Aboriginal so would have heard it on the ABC which was a cultural lifeline out in the sticks. A psychic I met once told me I had an Aboriginal Spiritual Guide out of the blue but I am not into that scene. Have since attended performances by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Borrowed a video many years ago from Dee Why library on the topic but found trying to learn was difficult from an access point of view the same problem I have had trying to learn Mandarin...a native teacher goes a long way! |

The first time I herd a Didgeridoo was when I moved to Colorado and went to a party. A man was blowing into a long tube that made a growling sound and when he would press his lips it would make a different sound. I fell in love with the didgeridoo right then. I went out then and made one out of PVC pipe. Dose not sound as good as the bamboo but it still gets everyone wanting to play the drum or other things (even sometimes dance). |
