Queensland's Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) has cleared Premier
Peter Beattie of any official wrongdoing in the alleged Palm Island
bribery affair.
The CMC investigated Mr Beattie's offer to pay an island council debt in
return for its support of a new community centre.
Mr Beattie has told Parliament the CMC has found that the offer was not
conditional on the council visiting the centre and was not secretive.
"The Crime and Misconduct Commission has found that I acted properly and
what that means now is that we can now continue focusing on the need to
give all members of the island community a better future," he said.
"Allegations that there was a tape recording which cast me in a bad
light have proven to be completely false - the tape was as blank as the
allegations against me." |
