A march the Sydney suburb of Redfern in memory of TJ Hickey has ended
peacefully.
The Aboriginal teenager died a year ago today
Hundreds of members of the Aboriginal community marched from Waterloo
Towers to The Block in Redfern.
They called for the inquest into TJ Hickey's death to be re-opened after
the original inquest cleared the police of blame.
His family say police were chasing him when he was flung from his bike
and impaled on fence.
A minute's silence was held and a plaque was presented to his mother.
His death last year sparked violent riots with more than 50 people arrested
New South Wales Premier Bob Carr says he would respond to calls for
another inquiry if he thought there was remote evidence of a cover-up.
"We've had a coronial inquiry - that took 600 pages of evidence and
interviewed everyone concerned," he said.
"There was a separate police inquiry oversighted by the ombusdsman and
there was an inquiry of the committee of the State Upper House so I
don't think there is anything more to be looked at here." |
