The Palm Island community is calling for those charged over the unrest
after the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee to be allowed back to
the north Queensland island for Christmas.
The 19 men have strict bail conditions which prevent them returning to
the island.
The community has told Queensland's Indigenous Policy Minister Liddy
Clark today that they want the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC)
investigation and the legal proceedings fast-tracked.
"There was some talk of that again but, not being my area, I'm unable to
comment on it but yes, they want to see the process quickened," Ms Clark
said.
Earlier today Ms Clark visited Palm Island for an intended meeting with
Aboriginal activist Murrandoo Yanner but he failed to turn up.
There had been tension between police and Mr Yanner after he called for
payback over Cameron Doomadgee's death.
Acting Opposition Leader Jeff Seeney says Ms Clark should be sacked for
wanting Mr Yanner to go with her to Palm Island.
He says the Premier stepped in this morning to make sure it did not happen.
Ms Clark has denied that Mr Beattie stepped in.
Mr Beattie says he stands by his Indigenous Policy Minister and has
rejected Opposition calls for her to be sacked. |
