Hundreds have gathered in central Brisbane for a national day of action
over the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee on Palm Island.
At least 700 Indigenous and non Indigenous people have gathered in
Brisbane's Roma Street Forum to show solidarity to the family of Cameron
Doomadgee and the residents of Palm Island.
The day of action began with a moment's silence then Cameron Doomadgee's
cousin Alex addressed the crowd.
"It's not a nice thing when we have to come together when one of our
brothers dies in custody," he told the crowd.
"I'm sure there's not a person here who hasn't got an uncle or aunty or
brother who has been harassed or arrested by the police and then they
cover it up and say they didn't do it."
A small number of police watched the rally from a distance.
Organisers plan to later march through the city to Musgrave Park. |
