A north Queensland community justice group says the re-arrest of a Palm
Island man for breaching his bail will not cause added tension at an
Indigenous rally in Townsville today.
Facing charges of looting and burglary, Cedric Barry was released on
bail on Monday.
Among the strict conditions placed on him and 18 others charged with
offences in the Palm Island riot was that he report to police daily.
He failed to do so on Tuesday and appeared in court yesterday charged
with a breach of his bail conditions.
Townsville Thuringowa Community Justice Group chair Graham Pattel says
the arrest will not lead to trouble at today's march.
"We will not be provoked by that action... we will keep our cool and we
will promote still a peaceful march," he said.
Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says the alleged Palm Island
rioters should take no part in today's march and rally.
Mr Atkinson says the Indigenous community has the right to protest over
the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee as long as it is done peacefully.
He says the people charged with rioting must stay away
"We're hopeful that the people who've been granted bail comply with the
conditions of the bail," he said.
"My understanding is that one of those conditions is that the people
who've been granted bail not engage in protest activity related to this
matter, so one would be hopeful they'd comply with those conditions." |
