Prime Minister John Howard says his Government will consider ways to
encourage more private land ownership among Indigenous Australians.
Mr Howard says the issue was raised when he met members of the
Government's new National Indigenous Council in Canberra today.
He says many members of the council urged the Government to help promote
a more entrepreneurial culture in Indigenous communities.
"One or two of the members in particular raised the desirability of
embracing concepts of private land ownership as an advance on the
concept of everything being owned by the community, and not enough
encouragement being given to individuals and families to own their own
properties," Mr Howard said.
"I indicated that the Government would respond in a generally positive
way to that point of view." |
