The Palm Island Council in north Queensland has stressed that alcohol did not play a role in the unrest on
the island last month.
Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy Minister Liddy Clark says the island has restricted alcohol sales
since the riot.
The riot was sparked by the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee.
Council chairwoman Eryka Kyle says some changes have been
made but the crisis situation should not be seen as an alcohol-related problem.
"I'll repeat that and repeat that there was not one
person in that whole community who had consumed alcohol prior to this event and after the event," she said. |
