Labor's Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous Affairs has called on the
Speaker of the House of Representatives to apologise to Michael Long
over an incident involving the removal of an Aboriginal flag.
Warren Snowdon says parliamentary security today forced Long to remove
an Aboriginal flag he was having his photo taken with outside Parliament
House.
He says the action was inappropriate on the day before the former AFL
star is due to meet Prime Minister John Howard to discuss Indigenous
affairs.
"The Aboriginal flag is an official flag. It comes under the Flags Act.
It can be flown above every public building in Australia," he said.
"He's told he can't show it. He's not demonstrating anything. All he's
doing is getting his photo taken in front of Parliament House.
"There's no threat to anyone and some clown says he can't have his photo
taken with an Aboriginal flag." |
