Northern Territory Labor Senator Trish Crossin says the Prime Minister
should use his early morning walk to join Michael Long as he arrives in
Canberra.
The Tiwi Islander and former Essendon champion is walking from Melbourne
to Canberra to put Indigenous issues on the political agenda.
He has secured the promise of a meeting with John Howard and is
continuing his walk.
Senator Crossin says when Long reaches the national capital on Thursday,
Mr Howard should make a reconciliation walk of his own.
"This is a Prime Minister who prides himself in walking around the
world," she said.
"He ought to meet Michael Long a couple of kilometres out of Canberra
and really show that he's walking with Aboriginal people.
"Perhaps walk the couple of kilometres to Parliament House with him as a
sign of symbolic reconciliation."
"This is a national footballer and a sportsman of renown," Senator
Crossin added. "This is a person in the Territory that is held in high
esteem in his community.
"The fact that he wants to walk from Melbourne to Canberra ought to be
enough for the Prime Minister really to join this man on the last couple
of k's." |
