The rights of Indigenous fishermen on the NSW far south coast are being ignored in the current restructure
of the fishing industry in the state.
That is the claim by Tilba's Ron Snape, who acts as a spokesman for the Indigenous fishers of the south-east and who is also
a member of a far south coast estuary management advisory committee.
Mr Snape says a briefing paper prepared for NSW Fisheries in September points to the demise of Indigenous fishermen on the
far south coast.
He says this latest report is just one of many that has ignored indigenous fishermen.
"We've had various reports coming
out - we've had the Black Marketing report coming out saying change the Act, look at Indigenous fishermen," he said.
"We've had the
AGAC report coming out from the Attorney-General.
Everything is pointing to change and look after this national icon - Aboriginal fishermen - look after them, but nobody's
doing anything about it." |
