Hundreds of people have gathered at Bidyadanga in the Kimberley region of north Western Australia to celebrate
the state's latest native title determination.
Under the consent determination handed down by Federal Court judge, Justice Tony North, the Karajarri people have shared rights
over 5,000 square kilometres of mainly pastoral land, south of Broome.
It is the first negotiated agreement involving WA pastoralists since the Ward decision clarified that pastoral leases and
native title can co-exist.
"I am immensely proud that my signature on these orders will carry the message of the Australian people to the Karajarri
people that justice is now being done," Justice North said.
The National Native Title Tribunal hopes the decision will lead to more claims being resolved through negotiation.
Today's determination brings to an end an eight-year struggle for recognition for the Karajarri people. |
