The Federal Opposition has committed to a $75.5 million boost to Indigenous housing if it wins government
on October 9.
Labor launched its policy at an Aboriginal community south-east of Alice Springs.
Under Labor's plan the extra money, to be allocated over three years, would go towards improved training and employment outcomes
through the community housing infrastructure program.
The joint announcement by Labor's housing spokesman Daryl Melhan and Indigenous affairs spokesman Kerry O'Brien is part of
the Opposition's $400 million boost to the commonwealth state housing agreement.
They say a Latham government will call on the states and territories to increase their funding.
Labor says the Aboriginal rental housing program would also be maintained if it wins government.
Senator O'Brien says the money will be part of a $400 million commitment under the commonwealth state housing agreement.
"We've made an unconditional commitment for additional funds but the reality is if we can have the states provide additional
funds we'll get a better outcome and we'll be calling upon the states to do all that they can to make a substantial contribution because they
know as well as we do that there's a serious problem to be addressed," he said. |
