In an emotional ceremony, an indigenous group has been handed freehold title over land in far north Queensland. It is the conclusion of Australia's first negotiated native title settlement over a pastoral lease. The Yalanji people have been handed 270 hectares near Mt Carbine, 155 kilometres north-west of Cairns. Traditional owner Danny O'Shane says the negotiated agreement was achieved through mutual respect and goodwill between the pastoralists and his people. |
