The pastoral industry is being urged to negotiate a better system of ensuring access to land by Aboriginal people. The Kimberley Land Council says it is unacceptable that traditional owners are still being locked out of their country. The council's executive director, Wayne Bergmann, says in one recent case a family received a letter saying they can no longer travel on a gazetted road to an official Aboriginal living area. The council wants the State Government and pastoral industry to embrace a co-existence agreement. The plea follows a big pastoral forum in Carnarvon on the weekend attended by 300 representatives from various sectors. Planning Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced working groups will now be set up to give recommendations to government on issues such as access to pastoral leases. |
