Sunshine Coast federal MP Peter Slipper has demanded the withdrawal of posters promoting the film Rabbit-Proof Fence in America, claiming they are immoral and offensive. The ads for the film, based on the Stolen Generations, ask the question, "what if the government kidnapped your daughter?", and say the practice happened every week in Australia from 1905 to 1971. Mr Slipper says the ads are sensational and misleading. "I think it's one thing to tell a story as it is and as a nation we sometimes have to confront elements of our past we're not particularly proud of, but I believe that promoters have a duty to be honest," he said. "What the advertisers are doing is completely immoral and grossly offensive. "Australian films being promoted overseas deserve a Hollywood-proof fence to protect them from tinseltown tripe." |
