A South Australian coronial inquest into petrol sniffing deaths has concluded after hearing evidence for a fortnight. Coroner Wayne Chivell travelled to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands in the state's far north to investigate the deaths of three young petrol sniffers. Witnesses included representatives of federal and state government departments, local police, health workers and relatives of the victims. The local NPY women's council was instrumental in having the inquest travel to the traditional Aboriginal lands. NPY coordinator Maggie Kavanagh says she is happy with the proceedings. "The women's council wanted to ensure that the broader issues surrounding petrol sniffing were able to be explored at this inquest and I think that's a very good thing that a wide range of information has been presented," Ms Kavanagh said. |
