The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) has called for a Senate inquiry into the reconciliation process. The recommendation follows the release of the commission's report into social justice and native title for indigenous Australians. In releasing the reports, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Dr William Jonas, has expressed serious concerns about the Federal Government's approach to reconciliation. Dr Jonas says the Government has failed to respond to the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation's recommendations and has sought to deliberately shut down debate on them. He says there should have been a formal response to the 10 year multi-million dollar process. To address the concerns, Dr Jonas has called for a Senate inquiry into the reconciliation process. He has also expressed concerns of the failure of the Native Title Act to deliver lasting outcomes for indigenous people. |
