The New South Wales Government has officially recognised the burial site of an Aboriginal man near Tumut as a place of Aboriginal cultural significance. Environment Minister Bob Debus, says the burial site of Hannibal Hamilton is the 39th site to be declared an "Aboriginal place" by the State Government. Hannibal Hamilton was a mediator between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in the 1800s, credited with solving cultural conflicts and acting as a guide and tracker. Mr Debus says the declaration of Aboriginal places is a practical outcome of reconciliation and five more Aboriginal places are now being finalised. |
