Older indigenous people in the far west of New South Wales are being given the option to take part in a new aged care program, which does not require people to leave home. The Uniting Church spoke to older people about the program in Menindee yesterday, and will conduct a similar meeting with the Maari Ma Aboriginal Corporation in Broken Hill today. Spokesman Bill Aldritt says Uniting Care has been given funding to provide the program to 30 Indigenous people. He says some of the services will include showering, providing transport, helping with shopping and medication. "They're uncomfortable with what's been going on, previously put in mainstream care and that really isn't appropriate for their cultural requirements," he said. "What we're looking at is doing something more acceptable to the indigenous cultures." |
