The Aboriginal Justice Advocacy Committee says the Northern Territory should introduce a court to deal specifically with Aboriginal offenders. A pilot program is being established in two Victorian centres that will see an Aboriginal elder sitting with a magistrate to advise on cultural matters. The committee's Chris Howse says Victoria is doing something concrete to address the needs of Aboriginal people. "The fact that some 70 per cent of people jailed in the Northern Territory are Aboriginal and the fact that at bush courts, virtually 100 per cent of the people dealt with at those courts are Aboriginal, then this is the kind of thing the Territory has been crying out for, this kind of sensitivity to be shown," he said. |
