Vanstone admits ATSIC's dismantling a long process

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 28 May 2004

Indigenous Affairs Minister Amanda Vanstone has rejected claims that the Government has mismanaged the dismantling of ATSIC, but admits theprocess may take longer than originally thought.

Labor claims the Government is unable to say how any of the Indigenous programs previously run by ATSIC will be managed.

Minister Amanda Vanstone admits that during the changeover from ATSIC to a Government-appointed national Indigenous advisory council, there may be several months where Aboriginal people will be without a national representative body.

Senator Vanstone says the process takes time.

"The Government will take the time it needs to take appropriate decisions and I'm not going to be pushed into making decisions earlier so that somebody can say they're happy with the timing," she said.

Senator Vanstone today appointed several ministers to a Government taskforce on Indigenous affairs.
