Indigenous community grieves Aunty's passing

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 1 January 2004

Queensland's Indigenous community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected leaders.

Aunty Beryl Wharton, who was born in Cherbourg west of Gympie, has passed away after a long illness.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) commissioner Robbie Williams says Aunty Beryl was known for her compassion and leadership on a range of issues, including Indigenous health.

"She was very involved in a number of community organisations that made contact with families, not only within the south-east Queensland area, but all throughout Queensland; but specifically in her own back yard and she looked after the people ... the larger families especially that were in need of help," he said.

A memorial service commemorating the contribution of Aunty Beryl Wharton is expected to be held early next week.
