'Uncle' enlisted to battle Aboriginal health, education issues

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 14 November 2003

The Northern Territory Government says an Aboriginal computer character called "Uncle" is set to improve health and education outcomes in Aboriginal communities.

Pioneered in central Australia, "Uncle" is an interactive learning program that will be used to deliver health messages.

Health Minister Jane Aagaard will launch the program this afternoon in Alice Springs.

She says the technology enables health workers in remote communities to generate health messages.

Those messages are then delivered by an on-screen, walking, talking Aboriginal character using their own particular dialect.

"Uncle" is expected to break down communication barriers that have hindered the delivery of health materials in the past.

Developed by the Central Australian Alcohol and Other Drugs Service, the next step will be developing automated translations for the Territory's main Indigenous languages.
