Land handed back to traditional owners in NT

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on May 17th, 2002.

Traditional owners in the Northern Territory's Roper River region have received the title deeds to the 1,800 square kilometre Urapunga Station.

The Federal Government handed the station to about 1,200 traditional owners in a special ceremony at the site.

The Ngalakgan people hope to develop Urupunga into a profitable cattle station or tourism venture.

The Federal Attorney-General, Daryl Williams, who flew to Urupunga this morning, says it is important that Aboriginal people own land under their own terms.
