Lack of services creating new Stolen Generation: committee

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 16 September 2003

The National Sorry Day Committee says another Stolen Generation is being created because there is a lack of culturally appropriate support services for Indigenous families.

The committee ended its annual conference in Alice Springs yesterday calling for more consultation to take place between the body and all levels of government.

The committee's John Brown says the latest figures show Indigenous children are being removed from their families at six times the rate of non-Indigenous children.

Mr Brown says in a growing number of cases the children are being placed with non-Indigenous families, which is unacceptable.

"In many cases the child can be placed with the wider family or the community in which the family lives or with the wider Aboriginal community and only as a last resort with the non-Aboriginal community," Mr Brown said.
