Purnululu gains World Heritage status

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 3 July 2003

The unusual beehive structures of Purnululu National Park in Western Australia have won the area a World Heritage listing.

The East Kimberley region, also known as the Bungle Bungles, was listed at a World Heritage Committee meeting in Paris last night.

Federal Environment Minister David Kemp says the announcement will put the area on the world map.

"These beehive, sandstone pinnacles and the sandstone towers surrounding them are quite exceptional in world terms," he said.

"You can fly over them, you can walk among them, you enjoy what is going to be what I believe is going to be one of Australia's major tourist attractions."
