Kemp rejects tent embassy heritage application

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 26 June 2003

Federal Heritage Minister David Kemp has rejected a last-minute attempt to retain a burnt-out building at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra.

A group of tent embassy supporters had filed an emergency declaration to protect the damaged information building from being removed from the site opposite Old Parliament House.

A spokeswoman from Dr Kemp's office says the application does not meet the conditions set down under the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Heritage Act.

The Australian Heritage Commission has already given the go-ahead for the removal of the damaged shipping container.

The building was damaged in an arson attack almost two weeks ago.
