WA Govt breaks off Bropho native title negotiations

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 18 June 2003

The Western Australian State Government has terminated negotiations with Aboriginal activist Robert Bropho and other native title claimants who have lodged claims over the entire Perth metropolitan area.

The Government says it became clear negotiations would not end in settlement.

Robert Bropho and four other families have a native title claim over a 9,000 square kilometre land mass, including all of metropolitan Perth, and inland, taking in Northam, Gin Gin and Toodjay.

A separate and overlapping claim by another Aboriginal family, led by Corrie Bodney, was also being negotiated.

After two-and-a-half years, the Government has decided to drop all mediations and leave it to the Federal Court to decide.

It is understood the Government experienced difficulties negotiating with Mr Bropho, who walked out of several mediation meetings.

A Government spokesman says it became clear a resolution could not be reached, and that resources would be redirected to resolve other outstanding claims that had greater prospects of resolution.
