Council says street children a common problem

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 13 June 2003

A central Australian Aboriginal council says towns across Australia are having similar problems as Alice Springs with children roaming their streets.

A conference was hosted by police in Alice Springs yesterday to consider what can be done to prevent children putting themselves at risk on the streets.

Peter Lowson from Tangentyere Council says the issues being debated in Alice Springs are not unique.

"People say it's because they've got no shelter, they feel frightened, they are at risk because they don't want to stay at home for particular reasons from, as I said, domestic violence... and that's why a lot of kids hang around the streets, but there is a lot and I mean it's Australia-wide."
