Aboriginal languages to be taught in schools

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on Aug 10th, 2002.

Aboriginal languages in danger of extinction are to be taught in schools
in New South Wales.

A program, to begin in 2004, is designed to encourage indigenous children
who are no longer able to speak their native language.

Education Minister John Watkins believes it is the first program of its
type in Australia.

"This new syllabus will give schools in local communities the capacity to
teach their local language to the kids, and that's a great thing for those
local communities because it's another way that those young Aboriginal
kids will stay in touch with their culture," he said.
